CHANGE

SHORT STORY

I was a neurotic for many years. I was anxious, depressed and selfish. Everyone kept telling me to change.

I resented them, and I agreed with them. I wanted to change, but simply could not, no matter how hard I tried.

What hurt the most was that--like the others--my best friend kept insisting that I change. So I felt powerless and trapped.

Then one day my best friend said to me, "Don't change. I love you just as you are."

The words were music to my ears:  "Don't change. Don't change. Don't change. I love you as you are.

I relaxed. I came alive. And suddenly...I changed!

Now I realize that I could not really change until I found someone who would love me whether I changed or not.

(Is this how You love me, God?)

And isn't that what we all want in life Steve ... for people to love us just as we are & for who we are. To be accepted with all our eccentricities, flaws & faults etc
I love this post! Hope all is well!

The self-centeredness - was born of need- However after a while my Mother made me aware that I should 'be seen and not heard ' in public.
THEN: 'Others may be watching you-'
so watch what you say and do!That was the meanest trick of all...took a long time to undo that critic!

I love this. I believe that is how God loves us, but I am so thankful for change through spiritual awakening :)

Yes Steve, this is how God loves you. If you need affirmation read the book "The Ragamuffin Gospel" and you will know just how much he loves you......

I had a Psychology prof once that said..."Here's a handy dandy little definition of neurotic...The inability to forget"!

That is the profound thing. Not wanting others to change and not trying to get them to change frees me up, lets me release my grasp, and will free them as well.

A therapist told me a long time ago that "all change begins with acceptance." ... yeah, i believe god does love me this way... thanks, Steve.
